John Whitmer was one of the Eight Witnesses to the Book of Mormon. The LDS Church was organized in his father's home on April 6, 1830. Whitmer recorded a number of revelations given to the Prophet Joseph Smith. Section 47 of the Doctrine and Covenants is a call to Whitmer to serve as church historian and recorder. He and Oliver Cowdery later carried more than 60 of the prophet's revelations to be printed in Missouri (see D&C 69:1-2). Although he eventually became disaffected from the church, Whitmer was always true to his testimony of the Book of Mormon. This view shows his burial site in Kingston, Caldwell County, Mo. Kingston became the county seat following the abandonment of Far West.
