Internationally regarded scientists who are longtime University of Utah faculty members have been appointed to lead the biochemistry and human genetics departments in the School of Medicine.

Christopher P. Hill, distinguished professor of biochemistry; Wesley I. Sundquist, professor of biochemistry; and Edna Benning, presidential endowed chair in biochemistry, have been named co-chairmen of the Department of Biochemistry. Hill and Sundquist, longtime research collaborators who joined the university in 1992, have made substantial contributions to understanding HIV and are known internationally for their work. They succeed Dana Carroll, who served as department co-chairman for almost 24 years. Carroll will continue with his research and teaching.

In the Department of Human Genetics, Lynn B. Jorde, professor of human genetics and a highly honored educator, will succeed two other internationally known geneticists, Mark F. Leppert and 2007 Nobel laureate Mario R. Capecchi, who have stepped down as co-chairmen. Both will continue their research and teaching in human genetics at the university.
