ST. GEORGE — Scott Brumfield has been named the new head football coach at Dixie State College.

The announcement was made Tuesday morning by Dixie State interim Director of Intercollegiate Athletics Maureen Eckroth at the bi-monthly booster club luncheon.

"I am thrilled that Coach Brumfield accepted the position as our head football coach," Eckroth said. "Our administration and staff realize the challenges he faces. He possesses all the positive attributes and credentials that will help our student-athletes be successful in the classroom and on the field."

Brumfield most recently has served as the offensive coordinator for the Red Storm for the past four years.

Prior to his arrival at Dixie State, Brumfield was the head football coach at Spanish Fork High School from 2000-2005. Prior to coaching, he was a free-agent signee of the Cincinnati Bengals in 1994 and went on to play six years in the National Football League. His career as an offensive lineman was cut short due to a spinal-cord injury. As a result of being temporarily paralyzed and having to relearn how to walk, he was the recipient of the 1997 Ed Block Courage Award. Brumfield was also awarded the United Way Unitarian of Year Award in 1998.

Prior to the NFL, Brumfield played two seasons at Brigham Young University under longtime head coach LaVell Edwards. His on-field efforts garnered him a first team All-Western Athletic Conference selection. He was a two-time Junior College All-American at Dixie State in 1988 and '89. After playing, he was inducted into the NJCAA Football Hall of Fame in 1995. He played under the most successful head coach in DSC school history, Greg Croshaw, who amassed career 214-57-1 record.

"It's and honor to work at Dixie State and it is very dear to my heart. It has been the foundation of helping me achieve all my goals and the success that I have. I look forward to the bright future of Red Storm football," Brumfield said.

Earlier this season, at the Hall of Fame game versus Adams State College on Aug. 27, Scott's No. 74 jersey was retired in a halftime ceremony.

Brumfield will retain Jim Eggleston as director of operations and has hired former Southern Utah University defensive coordinator Cole Wilson to run the Red Storm defense.

Brumfield is the father of four children — Brooke, Nick, Tyler, and Trey — and is married to the former Jody Tanner.
