SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake County Mayor and gubernatorial candidate Peter Corroon's downtown campaign headquarters was broken into Tuesday, but nothing was taken.

Police received a call just before 9 a.m. on a possible break-in at Corroon's campaign office, near 700 East and South Temple.

Someone apparently used an outside pipe to climb the side of the building to the second floor and then broke a window, damaging the window vents on an air conditioning unit, said Salt Lake Police Sgt. Robin Snyder. There was no indication the burglar entered the office, she said.

The burglar caused about $1,500 damage, but nothing was taken from the office, Snyder said.

Stella Thurkill, spokeswoman for Corroon's campaign, said someone apparently threw a rock through the window of the campaign's finance office.

Detectives did not have any evidence Tuesday to suggest whether the building was specially targeted because it was Corroon's office, Snyder said.

"We don't know who did this," Thurkill said. "It's a bit of a distraction."

She said the break-in made the staff feel "a little uneasy, but we're back to work."

Campaign staff members were in the office after 10 p.m. Monday, Thurkill said, and the break-in was believed to have happened sometime overnight.

Although investigators did not have a description of the burglar, they noted that the burglar left plenty of forensic evidence behind. Fingerprints, shoe prints and even bloodstains from where the burglar got cut on the window glass were collected.

"It looks like somebody hurt themselves attempting to break in," Thurkill said.

Anyone with information on the case can call police at 801-799-3000.
