SALT LAKE CITY — A water pipe break caused a geyser-like explosion for Fairpark residents Monday.

Salt Lake City public utilities officials said the cast-iron pipe, installed in 1929, gave way, and the pressure pushed the water to the top, creating "a nice plume of water," public utilities maintenance supervisor Bret Shelley said.

"It was just an old pipe," Shelley said. "We're working on putting another one in place."

The pipe burst around 6:40 p.m. near 500 North and 1500 West. Shelley said public utilities own about 500 miles of pipe from 2300 North to 9800 South, and crews monitor areas that have problems and try to fix old pipes.

"The only thing we can do is take care of the pipe that breaks the most," he said.
