GUADALAJARA, Mexico — The United States and Mexico won a pair of gold medals in rowing events Tuesday at the Pan American Games.

American Margo Shumway won the first gold of the day in the women's single sculls. She trailed late in the race but surged ahead at the finish. The American duo of Michael Gennaro and Robert Otto won the men's coxless pairs ahead of the Brazlian team.

The Mexican duo of Analicia Ramirez and Lila Perez Rul won the women's double sculls before Alan Armenta and Gerardo Sanchez won the men's event.

The United States leads the medal count with 18 golds.

Argentina also won a gold in rowing, finishing first in the men's quadruple sculls. Cuba was second and Mexico finished third.

Later Tuesday, Brazilian swimmer Thiago Pereira will be going for a fourth gold medal in the pool.

At the games four years ago in Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian won six gold medals to break Mark Spitz's record for most golds in one Pan Am Games.
