SALT LAKE CITY — Funeral services for longtime Deseret News opera and dance critic Dorothy Gilchrist Stowe have been scheduled for Tuesday, Nov. 8.

Services for Stowe, who died Oct. 27, will be held at 11 a.m. in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints meetinghouse at 680 E. 2nd Avenue.

While at the Deseret News for nearly 20 years, Stowe was honored with a number of awards including an Outstanding Achievement Award from the YWCA as a woman leader in Arts and Communication and a Governor's Award in the Arts. An early proponent of the Utah Opera, Stowe also traveled to Europe and the parts of Asia with the Tabernacle Choir, reviewed operas around the globe, saw Ballet West's Nutcracker dozens of times and was an outspoken crusader for arts in the schools.

After her retirement from the Deseret News, she continued to write for the Opera News and Dance Magazine.

Stowe grew up in Ontario, Ore. before attending Brigham Young University where she studied music. After studying in Los Angeles and at Columbia University, Stowe returned to Utah, where she received a Master's degree in music performance from BYU.

When she married George Stowe in 1951, the pair moved to his native Connecticut where George Stowe worked in insurance and wrote reviews for the Hartford Times. Eventually, her husband was diagnosed with a brain tumor, prompting Stowe to ask for a full-time job as the Times' music critic and was given the position.

A few years after George Stowe's death in 1972, Dorothy Stowe brought her family to Utah.

Paul Stowe, the couple's son, said his mother said that his mother loved working for the News and having the opportunity to travel as well as champion the arts in her own backyard.

Stowe, 89, left behind two daughters and one son, in addition to seven grandchildren. Another daughter and her husband preceded her in death.
