SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Prosecutors have charged a janitor with murder in the shooting death of a Northern California elementary school principal.

The El Dorado County district attorney on Friday charged John Luebbers in the death of Sam LaCara at Louisiana Schnell Elementary School in Placerville. No children were hurt.

Police say the 44-year-old Luebbers told investigators he was fired and went home to get a gun before returning to campus. He told investigators he shot LaCara twice in the school office.

School officials say Luebbers had only been sent home for the day after the two friends had a dispute about the district's selection of a new nighttime custodian.

Luebbers was scheduled to be arraigned later Friday.
