LAIE, Hawaii – A Mormon returned missionary is leaving his mark on Division II college basketball.

Marques Whippy, a senior from Bua, Fiji, is leading the nation in rebounding (12.4 per game), is third nationally in steals (3.1) and was recently named the Pacific West Conference player of the week. Whippy, who served an LDS mission in Suva, Fiji, averaged 16.5 points and 19 rebounds in a win over UH-Hilo and a double-overtime loss to Dixie State.

Through Friday, March 4, the Seasiders are 17-7 overall and 12-3 in the Pacific West Conference standings.

Earlier this season, the 6-foot-5 guard broke the all-time BYU-Hawaii career record for steals. Twice he has pulled down 21 rebounds in a game, one short of the school record.

BYU-Hawaii assistant coach John Wardenburg said Whippy is the team’s most consistent player.

“He is a young man who every game provides us with solid offense, defense and rebounding," Wardenburg said. "He does a great job of making sure we have a chance to win every game."

The coach went on to say Whippy provides an example of maturity and leadership as one of the squad’s team captains.

“He is an undersized post player, but he plays with gusto and passion," Wardenburg said. "Fans and teammates love him and his attitude. It’s quite an honor to lead the nation in rebounding. It’s a testament to his hard work.”
