For a family, $89,000 is a lot of money. That’s especially true if that figure represents a family’s debt.
Kansas City, Mo. resident Angela Coffman, who appeared on the TLC special “Extreme Cheapskates,” managed to eliminate $89,000 in debt in just six months, according to Business Insider.
The cheapskate turned TLC star told Business Insider that her family accumulated debt after borrowing for a new car, putting money down on a house that they rented out and other expenses. Then her husband lost his accounting job.
In order to save money, Coffman’s family ate food picked from their yard, stopped using heat and burned wood in the fireplace and switched out paper products with cloth, including diapers and napkins.
“We went all out,” Coffman told Business Insider. “We spent nothing that we did not have to in order to survive. We only kept $1,000 for ourselves. That was our only cushion between us and bankruptcy.”
