SALT LAKE CITY — University of Utah baseball players Tyler Wagner and Parker Morin were both selected on the second day of the 2012 Major League Baseball draft on Tuesday.
Wagner was selected in the fourth round, going 155th overall to the Milwaukee Brewers. Morin went in the 14th round to Kansas City with the 433rd overall selection.
Players have until Aug. 15 to decide whether to remain in college or sign with a professional team.
Wagner, a pitcher who will forgo his senior season to play professionally, played three seasons for the Utes. He set a school record with 17 saves, including 12 saves in 2011. Wagner has a career ERA of 2.72 with 90 strikeouts. He made 57 appearances and gave up just three home runs.
Wagner is the fourth Ute to be drafted in the first 10 rounds in the past five years. Last year, C.J. Cron was Utah's highest draft pick ever, going 17th overall to the Angels. Stephen Fife (third round, 2008, Red Sox) and Rick Anton (eighth round, 2012, Dodgers) were also taken in the first 10 rounds.
Morin, a catcher, was an honorable mention All-Pac-12 selection in his first season with the Utes. The junior college transfer and Park City resident led Utah with a .314 batting average, 35 RBIs, and tied for the team lead with 69 hits. He led the Pac-12 with 33 runners caught stealing.
In addition, Utah signee Caleb Frare was drafted in the 11th round by the New York Yankees (367th overall).
