SALT LAKE CITY — The candidates for a Salt Lake County Council seat aired concerns about campaign materials with just days left before the election.
Republican Aimee Winder Newton, who is running to keep her District 3 seat, has raised concerns that her Democratic opponent, former Murray Mayor Dan Snarr, is implying he has been endorsed by the Deseret News.
The Deseret News doesn't endorse political candidates nor has it given permission for candidates to use its name or logo.
Snarr's campaign literature has included statements from a personality profile published in the Deseret News last December, before Snarr had officially announced his candidacy, and in some cases used a similar typeface.
Newton claims she has received calls from friends and supporters asking whether Snarr had been endorsed by the paper.
"We've run a positive campaign based on facts. We expect that all candidates would do the same," Newton said.
Snarr contends he never intended to give the impression that the Deseret News supported his campaign, and he believed he had resolved the situation several weeks ago. If anyone asked, Snarr says he explained that he had not been endorsed by the paper.
Snarr says he hasn't sought endorsements throughout the campaign because "I don't represent the people that are politicians, I represent the hardworking families in Salt Lake County."
