"MIDDLE SCHOOL MAGIC, Vol. 3: Luminescence," by Braden Bell, Cedar Fort, 267 pages (f) (ages 10 and up)

Mormon author Braden Bell is back with the third offering in his Middle School Magic series of teen books. The trio of Connor, Lexa and Melanie have worked through a series of challenges but are now confronted with the apparent loss of their mentor and friend, Dr. Timberi.

The last time they saw him, he was surrendering to the evil Lady Nightwing in an attempt to save his rebellious and darkened son Timothy from Nightwing's wicked plans. The only hope the trio have that he might still be alive is the faint presence of Dr. Timberi’s sigil or soul presence that seems to reside in Melanie.

Picking up right where “Penumbras” left off, Bell immerses readers in a powerful world where light and dark battle with the amazing and progressing powers wielded by the Magi and the evil Darkhands.

As Connor, Lexa and Melanie discover new depths and limitations to their own abilities, they are also confronted by doubts and weaknesses that might stand in the way of their attempts to find and rescue their beloved friend. And somewhere in their adventure, they have to make a choice between destroying Timothy and helping him with a dangerous plan for revenge.

Written for the teen and pre-teen audience, “Luminescence” is an enjoyable read and should hold the attention of young people and adults alike. While it will be a little easier to follow the story if the other two books are read first, this volume can stand alone — there are enough clues to help with continuity.

The language is free of any swearing, there isn't any sexual content and any violence is described in an age appropriate way.

Bell has developed an entertaining story with many of the same characteristics as the Harry Potter and Percy Jackson series. Though not overtly stated, there are recognizable elements from beliefs and values of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the story.
