AMERICAN FORK — Lehi High played well for almost three quarters against American Fork Friday night at American Fork High School but somehow let their large lead slip away.
Brendan Bailey was the go-to guy for American Fork all night, nailing two 3-pointers and a total of 18 points in the 62-57 comeback win for the Cavemen. Spencer Johnson added 23 points in the win. George Brimhall came up with three charges for American Fork, which played a big role in the comeback.
Marcus Draney on the other hand helped Lehi maintain their lead the whole game, scoring 14 points for the Pioneers, but it just wasn't enough to get the team the win.
Lehi should not have let this game slip away. Lehi was leading the whole entire game until the fourth quarter when Bailey hit a clutch 3-pointer to give the Cavemen the one-point lead with three minutes left. American Fork went on a 10-0 run to end the third quarter behind a couple jump shots from Bailey and some free throws from Johnson. They were down by just 4 going into the fourth quarter.
They got the lead for good when Cameron Poulton cut back door and Bailey fed him for the easy layup. They went up 54-52 with two minutes left and Lehi never got that lead back. The Cavemen sealed the game with free throws down the stretch.
American Fork swept the season series against Lehi as they won the first matchup, 80-64. It will be interesting to see how Lehi responds next season.
The Pioneers (10-8, 1-6) will host Lone Peak on Tuesday, while American Fork (11-7, 5-2) will travel to Pleasant Grove on Tuesday.
