LOGAN — Utah State University men's basketball coach Stew Morrill announced Friday afternoon that he will be retiring at the end of the season.
Here is a look back at his coaching timeline.
1970-72: Morrill attended and played college basketball at Ricks College, now BYU-Idaho, in Rexburg, Idaho. He was an all-American during his two years at the college.
1972-74: He transferred to Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. He was an all-Big Sky selection and earned a bachelor’s degree in sociology during his two years at the university.
1974: He played professional basketball in Europe.
1975: He started his coaching career at Gonzaga as an assistant.
1978-86: He became an assistant at the University of Montana under Mike Montgomery, who later spent 17 years as the head coach at Stanford.
1986: He became the head coach at Montana after Montgomery accepted the head job at Stanford. During his tenure at Montana, Morrill had a record of 97-52 and led the Grizzlies to a Big Sky Conference championship and NCAA tournament appearance in the 1990-91 season.
1991: He took up the head coaching position at Colorado State University. During his tenure at Colorado State, he had a record of 121-86 and led the Rams to NIT appearances in the 1995-96 and 1997-98 seasons.
1998: He returned to Utah when he was named head men's coach at Utah State.
1999-2012: He took the Aggies to the postseason for 13 consecutive years. His Aggies won seven conference championships, six conference postseason titles and reached the NCAA tournament eight times. He was named coach of the year on five occasions during this span.
1999-2013: The Aggies won at least 21 games each season.
2001: He got his first and only NCAA tournament win of his career when No. 12 seed Utah State defeated No. 5 seed Ohio State, 77-68, in overtime in the first round.
2008: He earned his 226th victory as USU head coach and passed E. Lowell Romney to become the winningest coach in Utah State men’s basketball history with an 82–78 win over Boise State on Jan. 17 of that year.
2012: USU reached the CollegeInsider.com tournament final, losing to Mercer University, 70-67, at the Smith Spectrum.
2013: After 13 consecutive seasons reaching the postseason, Utah State does not reach a postseason tournament.
2014: Utah State finished the 2013-14 season with a record of 18-14, tied for eighth in the Mountain West Conference. On March 1, Morrill became the 14th active Division I head men's basketball coach and the 41st Div. I head coach all-time with 600 wins.
2015: He announces he will retire at the end of the season.
