President Donald Trump expressed his displeasure at the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision not to hear the defamation case in which he owes millions.
In 2023, a New York jury found Trump liable for defamation and sexual abuse against writer E. Jean Carroll. In 2024, a separate jury once again found him guilty of defamation against her and ordered him to pay Carroll $83.3 million.
Trump filed an appeal to the highest court last November, asking it to overturn the $5 million verdict. On Monday, the Supreme Court said it would not take up the case.
“Surprisingly, the Supreme Court declined to ‘review’ a Fake Case brought against me by a woman I never met (Decades old celebrity photo line, standing with her husband, does not count!),” Trump said in a Truth Social post. “I will continue the fight against this Weaponization and Lawfare Case against me, including the ridiculous claim of Defamation, with all of my power and strength.”
In May 2022, Trump was found civilly liable for sexual assault, and Carroll received about $2 million in compensation for the alleged assault and roughly $3 million for defamation, related to posts by Trump on Truth Social.
Carroll, an 82-year-old former advice columnist, claimed in her book, which was published in 2019, that she was sexually assaulted by Trump in the 1990s in a dressing room at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City.
Trump has repeatedly denied the allegations.
When Carroll was awarded $83.3 million in the second defamation case, Trump said he would be appealing both cases, which he accused of being a “Biden Directed Witch Hunt focused on me and the Republicans.”
In 2024, following Carroll’s first win against Trump, she posted on X that “Trump can be beat.”
“Never Forget May 9th! Trump can be beat! Trump can be trounced! Trump can lose,” she said.
