More than 100 students began the process to become a member of the BYU men’s soccer team Monday evening.
“It’s exciting to see so many people out here tonight,” junior Jake Miles said. “We have a great program here and it’s amazing to see so many people coming out here and wanting to be a part of it."
BYU men’s soccer team is an extramural sport that competes in the Premier Development League, a semi-professional league in the United States. The team plays other teams of the post-collegiate level.
Head coach Brandon Gilliam looks to fill around six starting spots for previous players and have a final team of around 20 players. Ten players are looking to return to the team from last year.
Tryouts were open to any male student attending BYU. The first round of tryouts runs from Monday evening to Tuesday evening, when a first cut will be made. A second cut will be made Wednesday evening, and a final cut will made Thursday evening.
The coaches are looking to fill around six starting spots from players who have moved on, and 10 players are looking to return to the team. Ten players from tryouts are hoping to fill those extra spots.
“It’s been my dream growing up to play for BYU,” said Trevor Montgomery, an undergraduate student at the tryout. “Hopefully, I can show the coaches how strong my touch is.”
