WEST JORDAN — Ten teenagers were arrested at a residential treatment center Sunday and booked into juvenile detention after allegedly causing a riot.
The incident happened about 6:30 p.m. Sunday at the Copper Hills Youth Center, 5899 W. Rivendell Dr. (8890 South). A handful of teens reportedly started arguing with staff members regarding the rules of the facility. The arguing turned into throwing items at staffers, said West Jordan Police Sgt. Joe Monson.
Staffers eventually called 911 saying that several juveniles were out of control. When West Jordan police arrived, they called for backup assistance from Unified police officers so they wouldn't be outnumbered, Monson said. A total of 15 to 20 officers responded.
When police arrived, the teens started fighting with the officers as well as the staff members, the sergeant said. The teenagers tried to punch, kick and scratch the officers. One was arrested for trying to grab an officer's Taser, he said.
The 10 juveniles who were arrested range in age from 13 to 17, Monson said. They were booked into Salt Lake County Juvenile Detention for investigation on a variety of charges, including rioting, assault on a police officer and attempting to disarm a police officer.
No one was seriously injured.
Copper Hills is a youth residential treatment facility that offers "specialized programming for behavioral misconduct, autism spectrum disorder and sexual misconduct. Chemical dependency and substance abuse treatment services are also available," according to its website.
The facility houses boys and girls ages 12 to 17.
