NORTH LOGAN — The North Logan Utah Stake of the LDS Church convened a disciplinary council Sunday night for Mormon critic John Dehlin, whose situation has drawn national media coverage.
The council considered allegations of apostasy. Disciplinary councils in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can result in no action, probation or excommunication.
Stake President Bryan King did not make a decision on Sunday, said James Jenkins, a local public affairs representative for the church's Utah North Area.
"President King will take some time to pray about the decision and will notify Brother Dehlin in the coming days," Jenkins said.
A stake president oversees multiple congregations, known as wards, in a geographical area, similar to a Catholic diocese.
Between 50 and 100 people gathered outside the stake center to support Dehlin.
Early last year, according to Dehlin, he asked the bishop of his LDS ward not to consider him a part of the congregation any longer. However, he said he did not wish to rescind his church membership.
Dehlin is the founder of the Mormon Stories podcast and website and the Open Stories Foundation, which he created as open forums about "Mormon-related faith crises."
