MILLCREEK — Police arrested a man in connection with a fatal shooting at a party in Millcreek early Sunday.

As of late Sunday afternoon, investigators had not found the firearm used in the shooting. But Police late Sunday identified the alleged gunman as Ahmed Ali, 29. He was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail for investigation of homicide.

He is accused of shooting Modibo Diallo of Murra, who died of his injuries after being taken to a hospital.

"When the suspect was arrested he was not in possession of the firearm. Detectives have been searching the area, and have searched it thoroughly, but have been unable to locate the firearm," Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said in a statement. "We want the community to be aware of this information for their safety. We would ask that if anyone locates the firearm to leave it in place can call police immediately."

Several people were at party at 1509 E. 3350 South #2, around 1:59 a.m. Sunday when "an acquaintance of the group" came to the party, according to Hoyal. Witnesses told police the acquaintance went to the basement where he got into an argument with a 33-year-old man, later identied as Diallo, Hoyal said.

After hearing gunshots, witnesses went downstairs to investigate, "confronted the suspect and then he fled the residence on foot," according to Hoyal.

Police received a report of a suspicious man matching the suspect's description at about 2:18 a.m. at 1707 E. Millcreek Circle, about three blocks from the shooting, Hoyal said.

Police say he was knocking on the door of the residence, carrying a handgun. He entered the garage, the homeowners told police. Responding officers helped the residents of the home escape safely.

"A SWAT team (then) responded and set up a containment and tried to negotiate with the suspect. At about 5:30 this morning the suspect surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident," Hoyal said.

The suspect was taken to an area hospital with injuries that police believe he sustained when he was confronted by people at the party.
