SPRINGVILLE — A man was killed in a two-vehicle crash involving a semitrailer in Spanish Fork Canyon on Tuesday afternoon, according to the Utah Highway Patrol.
The victim was identified late Tuesday as Arik Mack, 19, of Mapleton. Mack was reportedly driving a Honda Element eastbound on U.S. 6 at 3:20 p.m. when he crossed to the westbound side of the road and struck the semi head on.
Mack was ejected from the Honda and died on scene. Two occupants in the semi were also hurt — one critically and the other seriously — when it rolled and spilled a two-trailer load of coal across the roadway. A medical helicopter was dispatched to the scene.
No information was released Tuesday about a passenger who was in the Honda with Mack.
Westbound U.S. 6 was closed until about 5:30 p.m., UHP Sgt. Todd Royce said. Eastbound lanes were closed down when westbound traffic resumed and weren't expected to reopen until about 10 p.m.
The closures resulted in delays of more than 15 minutes in Spanish Fork Canyon, the Utah Department of Transportation said.
The semi downed nearby power lines and damaged a railroad control box when it rolled, according to UHP.
