It's magical, it really is. You don't ever know when it might be your last championship, so you appreciate every one of them. – Timpview coach Rob Sperry
SALT LAKE CITY — In a nearly flawless tournament throughout the past few days, Timpview reclaimed the 4A boys state tennis title Saturday.
It was the school's 10th state tennis championship since 2002, adding to an incredible 16 prior state titles.
"It's magical, it really is. You don't ever know when it might be your last championship, so you appreciate every one of them," Timpview coach Rob Sperry said. "Now to be back in the winner's circle, and to be able to take state, it feels so sweet and just an amazing feeling. There's a lot of good things when you're not in the winner's circle because I think it makes you appreciate it more."
Cementing the Thunderbirds into first place was a pair of singles titles early in the afternoon. Zach Simpson capped his senior year with a solid 6-2, 6-0 victory over Maple Mountian junior Eric Whiting in the second singles title match. Moments later, Thunderbirds underclassmen Scotty Wynn bested Maple Mountain sophomore Brigham Perry 6-0, 6-1 for the third singles title.
"Our family, fans and administration helped us in every way," said Sperry. "Yes they're in the background, but we were fortunate every single one of them were here today. That's unity, and when you have that kind of unification good things are going to happen."
Maple Mountain settled for second place despite sending four teams into their respective title matches in which they were unable to beat their Thunderbird opponents.
Mountain View junior John Dollahite marched to his third consecutive singles title by defeating Paul Monson 6-2, 6-2 for the two-time defending champs, which also prevented Timpview from recording a perfect score.
"This one feels amazing. Great as always," Dollahite said after defending his first singles championship. "I just wish that I could have my teammates up here with me, that's all."
The Thunderbirds' dominance over the 4A field culminated with both of their doubles teams clinching titles. Travis Wardrop and Mason Brockbank handed Maple Mountain yet another title match loss, this time dealing Nam Luu and Daniel Blonquist a decisive 6-4, 6-3 defeat in the first doubles championship.
In second doubles, Woods Cross’ Jake Cline and Davis Nielsen could not stop Timpview’s Nate Austin and Skyler Johnson in a 6-1, 6-3 loss.
