SALT LAKE CITY — Gov. Gary Herbert appointed the president of a charter school management company Tuesday to fill a vacancy in the Utah Senate.

Lincoln Fillmore, a South Jordan Republican, will replace Sen. Aaron Osmond, R-South Jordan, who resigned last month. Osmond initially stepped down to head the Utah College of Applied Technology but then changed his mind to stay with his current employer.

“Lincoln’s experience and knowledge as a businessman, teacher and administrator will be a valuable asset to the Senate,” Herbert said in a statement. “I am confident he will continue to be a strong advocate for education and serve the people of South Jordan, West Jordan and Herriman effectively.”

Osmond carried much of the major education legislation during his three years in the Senate.

Fillmore said he's honored to serve the people in his district.

“I feel a great responsibility to represent them honorably, and am eager to do the work that will make their government work well for them," he said in a statement.

Fillmore, a University of Utah graduate, founded Charter Solutions in 2007. He has been active in local Republican politics, working on ballot initiatives and candidate campaigns. He and his wife, Cheryl, are the parents of a young son.
