SALT LAKE — The Lone Peak and Davis girls tennis teams entered day one of the 5A state tournament at Liberty Park as co-equal No. 1s in the eyes of most. The two favored teams did not disappoint, winning every match the qualifying players played in. Each team advanced five positions to the semifinals in what turned out to be a bit of an easy day for the two favorites.

Despite the favored teams' dominance, the day was not without its share of surprises, one being Herriman's Megan Quinn who entered the day as the second seed from Region 4 in the first singles bracket. Quinn advanced the the semifinals on the heels of an upset win over Region 1's top seed Brooke Woodruff from Northridge, a senior with a 9-0 record until today's match.

Lone Peak's dominance shone brightly in doubles play as the Knights' two doubles te advanced to the semifinals with relative ease.

"I think today all of these girls really exceeded my expectations," Knights coach John LaCognata said. While many thought that Lone Peak would breeze through most of their opponents on the first day LaCognata wasnt so certain.

"I've got a really good team with great girls, but I've got three girls who have never had this experience before," he said. "Those three new girls really just came out and played like champions, and I couldn't really ask anything more of them."

Davis also controlled its destiny on Day 1, and was phenomenal in singles play. Davis' star singles players Whitney and Kenzie Turley, as well as Eliza Hafen each advanced the the semifinals by winning both of their matches 6-0, 6-0.

"They have incredible gifted singles players," LaCognata said.

"Well, obviously Davis, for the past five years its been either Davis or Lone Peak," he said when asked if any team stood out to him as a threat to his team defense.

The Knights and Darts finished Day 1 with 10 points each and will match up in two semifinal matches on Friday — second singles and first doubles.

Viewmont followed close behind with seven points while Brighton sits on its heels with six points.

The final day of the 5A state tournament is Friday beginning at 9 a.m.
