SALT LAKE CITY — While comedian and family man Jim Gaffigan enjoys performing stand-up comedy wherever he is, Gaffigan said that Salt Lake City is one of a few cities that has a little bit of magic where he feels he is on a special wavelength with the audience.
“When I perform in Salt Lake, even outside the fry sauce, there’s a communication there that is very much a conversation,” Gaffigan said. “I feel like from the beginning of the show, the conversation is on a great wavelength. It’s like everyone knows we’re going to have fun.”
Gaffigan will perform two shows at the Vivint Arena in December as a part of his Fully Dressed tour on Dec. 2 and Dec. 9. The second show was added due to popular demand, according to information from the Vivint Arena marketing manager.
“Selfishly, I’m excited because I enjoy performing in Salt Lake so much, so I’m selfishly excited that I get another night there,” Gaffigan said in a phone interview with the Deseret News.
Gaffigan, who is originally from a small town in Indiana, and his wife, Jeannine, are parents to five children. Jim Gaffigan said that his family is most important to him, as he’d rather have his children look at him as a good father than be wildly popular as a comedian and actor.
Last year, Gaffigan began a TV show called “The Jim Gaffigan Show” that he wrote and executive produced with his wife. After just two seasons, Gaffigan said that he decided to end the show so that they could spend more time with their family.
“There were no problems with our kids, but our children are young and it’s not worth the gamble,” Gaffigan said.
Because of these reasons, Gaffigan said sensibility-wise, the culture of Utah aligns with his comedy and there is a shared desire with him and the people in Utah about how to lead a life.
“I write all my material with my wife, so when we construct a show it’s a reflection of what we’re about and everything, and I think that makes sense to people in Utah,” Gaffigan said.
The Fully Dressed tour is Gaffigan’s fifth major tour. The material from this tour will be retired at the end of the year, and then he will start on new material. Gaffigan said that he feels seeing this routine toward the end of the tour will give his audience the best amount of exposure as audiences will be seeing something that’s completely done and even has kernels of the next special he’s working on.
The material from this tour contains things that Gaffigan has spent a lot of time working on and honing. While Gaffigan is known for making a lot of jokes centered around food, this time there will be fewer food jokes simply because Gaffigan said that he’s already discussed every food item that humans have ever consumed.
In regard to food and condiments, there’s another reason why Gaffigan said he is excited to come to Utah.
“I’m just excited to get some fry sauce,” Gaffigan said.
Both shows in Salt Lake begin at 8 p.m. at the Vivint Arena and range in price from $36.75-$56.75 per ticket.
