PERRY, Box Elder County — The family of a 16-year-old girl who died after being hit by a truck as she crossed a Perry highway over the weekend remembered her as a kindhearted friend who brought joy to all around her.

Alexis Nelson was attempting to cross U.S. 89 near 3484 South about 4 p.m. Sunday when she was hit by a northbound pickup truck. She was taken by medical helicopter and died at a Salt Lake City hospital.

Her friend, 14-year-old Sarah Hardy, was also hit and remained in critical condition Tuesday.

Following her death, Nelson's family issued a statement mourning her loss and highlighting the qualities that made her a loving family member, a faithful friend and a committed community volunteer.

"We can tell you that Alexis was a special Angel in our community that will be missed," the family wrote.

They also provided a recent social media post from Nelson that they said illustrated the kind of person she was.

"I love to make someone smile any chance that I get because I love spreading positivity throughout life," Nelson had written.

Nelson was a junior at Box Elder High School. Funeral arrangements are pending.
