SALT LAKE CITY — Whosoever attends the museum Saturday, if he be worthy, shall enjoy a celebration of Thor.
The Natural History Museum will be expanding its “Vikings: Beyond the Legend” exhibit with a celebration of “Thorsday” on Saturday, Oct. 28.
The special event pays homage to the upcoming Marvel Studios film "Thor: Ragnarok" in theaters Nov. 2.
Guests at Saturday's Viking exhibit will be greeted with the full Norse experience, including Thor costume contests, make-your-own Viking shields, Thor-themed food and chances to win VIP screening tickets to “Thor: Ragnarok," according to the news release.
The centerpiece of the “Thorsday” celebration will be a replica of Mjölnir, Thor’s hammer. Guests can pose with the hammer, which has been forged by historical interpreter and blacksmith Aaron Richardson, who uses Viking-age methods to shape metal at his Eden shop in Weber County.
Attendees are encouraged to dress in their best Thor-related costumes and attire. Beginning at 1 p.m., the first 200 guests to arrive with Thor-themed costumes will receive a complimentary gift pack, according to the release.
“Vikings are a huge part of our daily lives,” said Sarah George, the museum’s executive director, in the release. “They are rooted in family history for many Utahns, infused into our language and engrained in our culture.
“Thursday is named after the Norse god, Thor, and his influence as a pop culture icon is deeply set. 'Thorsday' is a fun way to get excited for the new Marvel Studios film, while also discovering the meaningful culture of Vikings at the Museum.”
