Senior Jason Lynch posted a program record in the men's 3,000-meter run en route to helping Utah Valley men's and women's track and field to 11 victories in Friday's UVU Collegiate Invitational at Hal Wing Track and Field.
Lynch's mark of 8:13.10 gave him first place in the 3K and surpassed former Wolverine Cliff Nielson's previous school record set in 2012 by 0.65 seconds. It also was the fastest 3K ever recorded on UVU's home track.
"The 3K was huge for Jason [Lynch]," said Utah Valley head coach Scott Houle. "He continued to lead us in the distance runs there along with Tyson [Lambert] today. This was just his second week back in competition at a meet, and seeing him be able to set another school record here on our own track was a phenomenal feat."
Following behind Lynch in the men's 3,000 meter, junior Tyson Lambert (8:22.11) finished in second as part of the Wolverines' group of four top-four finishers in that race. Also joining UVU's senior-junior duo in the top four were freshman Kevin Lynch (8:54.09) and junior Logan Petty (8:57.08), who placed third and fourth, respectively.
In the men's triple jump, freshman Albert MacArthur recorded a personal record with a leap of 15.14 meters to take first. MacArthur's jump tied for 47th in the nation and marked the second-farthest triple jump in UVU outdoor history, falling just .16 meters shy of breaking the program record.
"Albert [MacArthur] had an amazing triple jump with his great mark there to move him up our all-time list. We're hopeful that what he did today will qualify him for the NCAA Championships this year as one of the top in the nation," Houle said.
Utah Valley dominated the women's distance races, with wins in the 3,000-meter steeplechase by senior McKenzie Preece and a 3K run victory from senior Darian Dutton. Preece clocked a time of 10:51.89 for the program's fifth all-time best finish in that event, while Dutton's 9:54.21 gave her the second best all-time mark by a Wolverine in the women's 3K.
Dutton led a contingent of four UVU runners to place inside the top five in the women's 3K, as junior McKayla Morgan took third, freshman Sam Hedquist finished fourth and junior Savannah Berry placed fifth.
In the women's 400-meter hurdles, senior Lexi Shaw competed unattached and earned a victory after running a 1:01.43, which fell just 1.11 seconds short of her own program record set in the squad's outdoor season opener at UNLV. Meanwhile, junior Sean McGetrick picked up another UVU win in the men's 110-meter hurdles. The junior hurdler's time of 14.55 seconds was only .08 seconds off his personal mark for that event.
UVU junior sprinter Alena Gillespie kept up the Wolverines' momentum in the women's 200-meter dash, logging a time of 24.16 seconds to finish in first place. On the men's side, Jordan Carder pulled out a 100-meter dash win behind a time of 10.76 seconds, while Brandon Smart (10.87) finished in third.
Junior Mykah Ouderkirk led UVU's women's sprinters across the finish line in the 400-meter run with her second-place finish on the seventh-best time in program history (56.68). Following behind Ouderkirk for the Wolverines were junior Courtney Paddock (57.46) in third and UVU sophomore Ashley Snyder (58.07) in fourth place.
Representing the Wolverine throwers, senior Chantil Martin took first place in the women's hammer throw. Martin recorded a throw that traveled 51.37 meters to claim the top spot at the single-day meet.
The Wolverines rounded out their successful stretch of events in the relays with first-place finishes in the women's 4x400 relay and men's 4x100 relay. UVU's women's A team ran a 3:50.57 to win the 4x400, while UVU's men's A team finished the 4x100 with a time of 41.17 seconds.
"I'm excited for how well we performed," Houle said. "The weather held up for us, and it was the largest meet we've had here and it's improved to where now we have better competition show up here. We used this as a good tune-up for a lot of our guys and girls to allow them to get ready for our next meet, so it was overall a great day for us."
Freshman jumper Tiera Orr matched her own personal record for the UVU women in the women's high jump. Orr placed sixth in the event with her 1.65-meter leap.
Utah Valley continues its string of in-state meets when it heads to the Utah Spring Classic on Friday, April 7, and Weber State Invitational on Saturday, April 8.
