Utah went to the dark side for its favorite Star Wars film.
A new analysis from Reviews.org ranked every state’s favorite Star Wars movie. “The Empire Strikes Back” topped the list in the Beehive State.
All of the Star Wars films found a home on the list. “A New Hope” and “Return of the Jedi” won the most states with 19 and 11, respectively.
But Utah residents, who Googled five of the eight films more than those in any other state, picked “The Empire Strikes Back” as their favorite.
For years, “Empire” has been tops for fan reviews and media critics. Reviews from Reel Rundown, Movie Pilot and Wired (among many others) ranks “Empire” as the best film in the series.

On Rotten Tomatoes, “Empire” holds a 94 percent ranking, the highest of any of the films. “A New Hope” is close with 93 percent, which is just a hair more than “The Force Awakens,” which has a 92 percent ranking.
Utah isn’t the only state to go against the grain. Idaho’s favorite Star Wars film is “Attack of the Clones,” which has the lowest Rotten Tomatoes ranking of all Star Wars saga films, with 65 percent.
Some other interesting findings from the report:
- All prequel films won at least one state. “Revenge of Sith” earned the most wins.
- There’s not a really a connection between politics and Star Wars films. But “Return of the Jedi” won in California, Oregon, Washington, Illinois and Vermont. Swing states Florida and Michigan favored “The Force Awakens,” according to Mashable.
Newest film “Rogue One” topped the rankings in Montana and Virginia.
- Utah’s other two top Star Wars films were “The Force Awakens” and “Return of the Jedi.”
