PAYSON — A wildfire scorched more than 2,250 acres of land on West Mountain near Payson, officials reported on Friday.

The fire was 50 percent contained by Friday night, said incident commander Dave Marsella.

"Most of the fuel is light and flashy," he said. "We had pretty strong winds out of the north, which tended to push the fire all the way down the west side."

No structures are currently threatened, though several orchards were in danger earlier in the day, along with the West Mountain Observatory and radio towers near the top of the mountain.

The cause is under investigation, though officials suspect the fire to be human-caused.
