MOUNT PLEASANT — A 10-year-old boy was in the hospital in serious but stable condition Wednesday after he was shot in the head by another child with a .40-caliber handgun.
Police were called to a home about 2:40 p.m., where an 11-year-old also was inside. Officers believe one of the children may have known the combination to the family's gun safe and the firearm went off when it was taken out of the safe.
Family members said the boy who was shot on the left side of his head was awake and talking before he was flown from Sanpete Valley Hospital to Primary Children's Hospital. He was expected to recover.
The children involved in the shooting were related, said Mount Pleasant Police Chief Jim Wilberg.
"It's been hard on the family," Wilberg said Wednesday afternooon. "We're just starting our investigation."
