GARDEN CITY, Rich County — A semitrailer rolled and crashed into a storefront Wednesday night in Garden City, killing the driver and critically injuring the passenger.
Just before 6:40 p.m., the truck overturned at the intersection of U.S. 89 and state Route 30 and slid into a sporting goods store, Utah Highway Patrol announced.
The driver and passenger were taken by ambulance to Logan Regional Hospital in critical condition, said Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Nick Street. The driver, Ahmed Abdelgader, 31, of Omaha, Nebraska, was airlifted to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, where he succumbed to his injuries late Wednesday night.
The passenger was transferred to McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden.
The truck appeared to be driving erratically and at a high rate of speed, witnesses said, when it ran a stop sign and attempted to turn right from Highway 89 onto S.R. 30, according to the Utah Department of Public Safety.
No one was injured in the store, which police believe was empty, but the building was damaged "to the point of structural instability," police said.
