In a recent interview with Today’s Willie Geist on the “Sunday Sitdown” podcast, Geist and “Frozen’s” Kristen Bell had a very real conversation about anxiety, depression and mental health,
Bell and Geist discussed the shame that surrounds most discussions about mental health, with Bell commenting that “everyone thinks there’s some shame in it.”
Geist then noted that by someone as bubbly as Bell speaking out about her own struggle with mental health, the conversations becomes more normalized.
“I’m like ‘bubbles, glitter!’” Bell joked. “No, it’s not always that way. I am someone who takes medication for her anxiety and depression. I am someone who has to check myself and sometimes — if I’m feeling really low — make a checklist of good and bad things in my life to see if it’s my mental state or if we really have a problem.”
Bell then joked that, while she hates crediting her husband, Dax Shepard, whom she married in 2013, with everything, their conversation about mental health was started by him.
“He was like ‘Why don’t you talk about your anxiety and depression?’ and I had never thought about that before,” she said. “And I immediately felt incredibly irresponsible.”
