1983: As co-captain of the “Phi Slama Jama” University of Houston men’s basketball team, he helped lead a team that featured future NBA legends Hakeem Olajuwon and Clyde Drexler to a second-place finish in the NCAA Tournament.
1990: Was named head coach at Dixie College after serving three years as an assistant. Prior to that, Rose had been a coach at a number of Utah high schools.
1997: Became an assistant coach on Steve Cleveland's staff when Cleveland was named BYU coach; served as an assistant for eight seasons.
April 11, 2005: Was hired as BYU head coach after Cleveland left to become head coach at Fresno State.

2006: Named Mountain West Conference Coach of the Year in his first season after leading BYU to 20 wins and an NIT bid; won the award again in 2007 and 2011.
June 2009: Diagnosed with pancreatic cancer; has undergone some procedures over the years to manage it and is active in fundraising for cancer research.
2010: Led the Cougars to their first NCAA Tournament win since 1993, beating the Florida Gators.
2011: With Naismith Player of the Year Jimmer Fredette on the roster, Rose coached the Cougars to a No. 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament, where this time they fell to the Gators in the Sweet 16. It marked the furthest BYU had advanced in the tournament since 1981. For his efforts, Rose was named a finalist for Naismith Coach of the Year.
2012: Guided the Cougars to a 26-9 record in their first season in the West Coast Conference and their sixth straight NCAA Tournament appearance. BYU missed the tournament in 2013 but returned in 2014 and 2015. The Cougars have not been back since 2015.

2013: Inducted into the Dixie State Athletics Hall of Fame.
2016: While BYU did not make the NCAA Tournament, it earned a bid in the NIT and advanced to the semifinals in New York. The Cougars did the same in 2017 and 2018. They did not go to a postseason tournament in 2019.
Feb. 4, 2017: Reached the 300-win mark at BYU and a short time later moved into second all-time in program history in wins. Now, with a record of 348-135, Rose is 23 wins behind Stan Watts for the program’s all-time record.
2018: BYU reached the 20-win mark for the 13th consecutive season under Rose. The Cougars won just 19 games in 2019.
