SALT LAKE CITY — Coca-Cola and Diet Coke will be visiting a galaxy far, far away.
The Coca-Cola Company announced over the weekend that it will have custom drinks bottles for the opening of “Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge” at Disneyland on May 31 and Walt Disney World on Aug. 29.
Park guests will drink from custom bottles for traditional Coca-Cola, Diet Coke, Sprite and Dasani water.
The bottles will appear orb-like and will have “resealable caps and brand names printed on scuffed, rusted labels in Aurebesh, the written language featured in the film franchise,” according to a press release emailed to the Deseret News.
- “When we first approached Coca-Cola and shared the idea of bringing their products into the Star Wars galaxy in a new and unique way, they immediately saw the opportunity to give our guests the refreshing drinks they love in a way that maintained the authenticity of the story — which is very important to us — and that was, frankly, just plain cool,” said Scott Trowbridge, portfolio creative executive and studio leader of Walt Disney Imagineering, in a statement.
- He added, “For over 40 years, people have been dreaming about stepping into the worlds of Star Wars. With Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, we want to give our guests the opportunity to finally make those dreams come true. We’ve worked very hard to make sure that every detail feels authentic and consistent with what a ‘real’ Star Wars location would provide.”

Context: Coca-Cola and Disney have had a longstanding partnership, CNN reports. The soda brand is available almost anywhere at the park.
- Susan Propp, Coke's vice president of strategic partnership marketing, told CNN that the drink bottles could be souvenirs and collectibles for “Star Wars” fans since they will only be sold at the park.
- "I think guests will probably drink one to stay hydrated or enjoy it in the land and then probably throw one in their backpack and take it home," she said.
- The new theme park will try to create an immersive “Star Wars” experience. It will include a ride centered around the Millennium Falcon, called “Smuggler’s Run,” where you’ll pilot the ship. Another ride, called “Rise of the Resistance” is set to launch later this year.
- According to CNN, the new bottles will help create the ultimate immersive experience for the theme park. The drinks will “help to maintain the illusion of the land and its story for guests.”
Bigger picture: The park has gone to great measures to create an immersive experience. For example, I reported for the Deseret News that Disney plans to hand out bathroom passes for guests waiting in line. According to People magazine, “Star Wars” characters will hand out the passes to add to the experience.
