During the afternoon, museum staff turned down the lights down, reduced the noise in the museum, and offered special programming and activities for those with sensory needs and those affected by autism spectrum disorder. Typically, Discovery Gateway offers Sensory Inclusive Afternoons the last Tuesday of every month at a reduced price from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m. However, thanks to a grant from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Foundation, the charitable giving arm of Deseret Management Corp., the museum will host free Sensory Inclusive Afternoons from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. on May 28 and June 25. All children and families are invited. Discovery Gateway is the first children’s museum to be certified Sensory Inclusive by KultureCity, a leading nonprofit recognized nationwide for using its resources to effect change for those with sensory needs, in addition to those affected by autism spectrum disorder.
