PROVO — BYU senior forward Zac Seljaas broke his right foot during an exhibition game last Tuesday during the basketball team’s tour of Italy.

Seljaas returned home and is scheduled to undergo surgery Friday, according to BYU basketball spokesman Kyle Chilton.

The program is not offering a specific timeline for his return.

Seljaas’ injury is the latest setback the Cougars have suffered in recent weeks. Earlier this month, BYU announced that senior Yoeli Childs has been suspended by the NCAA for the first nine games of the regular season.

If Seljaas is unavailable early in the season, it will be a blow to the Cougars’ depth in the front court. BYU will have to depend heavily on forwards Gavin Baxter, Dalton Nixon and Kolby Lee until Childs and Seljaas return to the court.

The Cougars could be down to eight scholarship players when it tips off the season in November.

Last season, Seljaas played in all 32 games, starting 15. He shot 42% from the field, including 37% (44 of 118) from 3-point range, and averaged 7.1 points per game. Seljaas also averaged 3.5 rebounds per contest.

Seljaas scored 12 points (including 3 of 4 shooting from 3-point territory) in BYU’s first exhibition game in Italy.

BYU basketball improved to 3-0 on its Italy tour with a 71-62 win against Stella Azzura Academy on Thursday in Arena Arturo Feilici.

The Cougars finish up play in Italy on Friday with a second game against LCC International (11 a.m. MT). BYU beat LCC International 87-46 on Tuesday.
