SALT LAKE CITY — On Saturday, Marvel announced the release date for “Black Panther 2,” the sequel to the Oscar-nominated film “Black Panther.”

The film will drop on May 6, 2022.

Director Ryan Coogler appeared on stage with Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige to make the announcement at the D23 Expo, which is Disney’s annual convention for news and announcements.

The May 2022 release date may be significant. Per Collider, the film won’t have any immediate competition when it drops. And the May slot was usually held for “Avengers” films and other big Marvel releases, like “Iron Man 3” and “Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.”

“Black Panther” was one of the highest-grossing films in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, earning more than $700 million at the box office with a $1.3 global intake.

The original film starred Chadwick Boseman, Michael B. Jordan, Lupita Nyong’o, Letitia Wright, Danai Gurira, Angela Bassett, Winston Duke, Forest Whitaker and Sterling K. Brown. It’s unclear who will return for the new film.
