What’s going on: Six Democratic Party candidates for the 2020 presidential election will debate Tuesday night.
Where: The debate will take place at Drake University in Des Moines, Iowa.
Host: CNN will co-host the event with the Des Moines Register.
When: Tuesday, Jan. 14, 9-11 p.m. EST (7-9 p.m. MT).
Why it matters: The debate takes place less than a month before the Iowa caucuses, which begin on Feb. 3, according to Time magazine.
The lineup: The qualified candidates include:
- Former Vice President Joe Biden
- Former South Bend, Indiana, Mayor Pete Buttigieg
- Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar
- Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders
- Billionaire Tom Steyer
- Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren.
Who’s not there: Two candidates who have made national headlines won’t appear in the debate.
- Andrew Yang did not qualify for the debate stage, despite raising $16.5 million in the final three months of 2019, according to The New York Times.
- Former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg did not qualify, either.
Who dropped out: A number of candidates dropped out since the last debate, including:
- New Jersey Sen. Cory Booker
- Author Marianne Williamson
- Former secretary of housing and urban development Julian Castro
- California Sen. Kamala Harris
