There are a wide variety of ways for teams to try and win a track and field state title, and at Wednesday’s 5A state track meet a pair of Region 7 champions demonstrated the polar opposite ways of accomplishing the same goal.

For Orem’s boys, it dominated the 5A field as it nearly doubled second-place Park City for its first state championship since winning back to back titles in 2015 and 2016.

For Timpanogos’ girls, it knew that every single point would matter throughout the competition, and it did as the Wolves’ pulled away late in the meet to capture its first state title in school history.

Orem racked up 160 points, to win by 72 points. Timpanogos tallied 68 points to win by 17 points. The end result was the same for both regardless of the numbers: putting hardware in the school trophy case.

“We’ve all been working hard and we came first in region, and all throughout the season our main goal has been May so it’s so cool to reap the rewards with all of our hard work to get that,” said Timpanogos’ Kaylee Griffiths.

In many ways, it was her performance in the 200 late in the race that sealed the title for the T-Wolves. By finishing third in a stacked field, she gave her team a 9-point cushion heading into the 4x400 finale. All the T-Wolves needed was a top eight finish to clinch the title, and they put an exclamation on it by finishing second.

As a team, Timpanogos had just one first-place finish at the meet, a strong win in the 4x200 relay — the first year the event was included at a state meet. It picked up points in other ways though, include Griffiths’ runner-up finish in the 100-meter, Raygan Peterson’s second-place finish in the 1,600-meter and Summer Christensen’s second-place finish in the high jump.

For Orem’s boys, it sent 23 individuals to the podium to collect top eight medals while all four relays teams placed in the top six as well.

Orem’s individual winners were Roman Moore (200-meter), Taysom Echohawk (1,600-meter), Logan Jensen (110 hurdles), Mark Bryant (shot put and discus) and Jackson Merrill (pole vault). It also finished first in the 4x100 relay as Moore anchored an exciting finish against rival Mountain View.

Echohawk started the day with the victory in the 1,600-meter and that set the tone for what would be a dominant day.

“I think it was mostly just to help my team out this year with the state title and do as much as I could to help them out and win that this year,” said Echohawk about grinding out the win with a great time of 4:14.51.

The sophomore said he wasn’t feeling that great heading into the race, but he was really pleased with how strategically ran a winning race.

Park City’s runner-up finish was highlighted by Will Henry’s win the 800-meter and then a team win in the 4x800 relay.

Mountain View finished third on the boys side with 58 points, as Carter Walker earned his team’s lone individual title in the high jump.

Another notable win on the boys side was Woods Cross’ Landon Bott winning the 400-meter with a time of 48.78, the third-best performance in that event this season in Utah.

While Timpanogos’ girls used depth to claim its first-ever title, Carlee Hansen almost single-handedly led Woods Cross to a runner-up finish with 51 points.

The senior North Carolina commit won the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters and then finished fourth in the 400-meter. She was hoping to end her career with a state record in either the 800 and 1,600, and even though neither happened she ran a phenomenal 1,600-meter race posting a time of 4:49.18, the second-fastest time in state history.

“I’m mostly frustrated cause I felt like I didn’t run that smart. That’s really why I’m frustrated. All around I’m still surprised by myself to get that time. If I reflect on my goals two years ago and I never imagined running this fast in Utah so it’s still encouraging,” said Hansen.

The start of the meet was delayed 45 minutes because of lighting, and Hansen admitted as a result she was so eager to get the race started she probably went out with too fast of a pace.

Lehi’s Sarah Ballard was a multievent winner herself as she won both the 100 and 200 meters.

Viewmont’s Sarah Spangenberg won the 100 hurdles (14.87) and Springville’s Sydney Watson won the 300 hurdles (45.12), both with top five times in the state this spring.

In the field events, Highland’s Lili Fifita turned in the best performance of the meet as she won the shot put with a throw of 42’06, the second-best performance in the state this year.
