A year after COVID-19 spoiled Lone Peak’s bid for a 3-peat in girls track, it went out and dominated the 6A state track meet yet again on Wednesday to win its third straight state championship.
For the boys, Corner Canyon hopes its run of state titles is just getting started.
Led by a dominant meet from its football players in the sprints, and then late-season contributions from a basketball standout who came out for high jump, Corner Canyon tallied 99 points to hold off a by 11 points to claim the 6A title after winning the 5A title in 2019.
“We didn’t get to run last year, which was a huge disappointment to these kids, and for them to persevere through it and keep training and keep it going was outstanding of them, and exciting for them.” — Lone Peak coach Brad Molen
Skyridge finished second with 88 points, with Roy in third with 63.5.
“It’s been so much fun just because we’ve put in so much effort to try and win and succeed. Last year we trained so hard and not being able to have a season frustrated us, we got one meet before it all got canceled,” said Corner Canyon standout Cody Hagen, who won the 100 and 200 meters.
For the girls, Lone Peak coach Brad Molen said that same mentality was a season-long theme for his team, which easily won the title with 118 points, followed by Layton and Westlake in a second-place tie with 63 points.
“We didn’t get to run last year, which was a huge disappointment to these kids, and for them to persevere through it and keep training and keep it going was outstanding of them, and exciting for them,” said Molen.
Lone Peak only finished with one individual winner — Katie Bybee in the 800 meters — but it won three relays and put plenty of athletes on the podium in the 400, 800, 1,600 and 3,200 meters. In fact, Lone Peak runners finished fourth through eighth in the 400 meters and then third, sixth and seventh in the 1,600 meters.
While Lone Peak’s girls won with more with their depth in the distance races, Corner Canyon’s boys did so with their sprints.
In the 100 meters, Hagen finished first, Harrison Taggart second and Noah Kjar sixth. Then in the 200 meters, Hagen and Taggart again went 1-2, with Kjar in fourth.
The Chargers also won the 4x100 and 4x200 relay, in addition to the 4x800 relay.
Two other performers contributed big-time points for Corner Canyon. Basketball player Carter Welling only came out for track about a month ago at the encouragement of some of his peers, but his third-place finish on Tuesday night contributed valuable points.
Jake Orr’s runner-up finish in a stacked 800-meters field was just as important as he finished second to West Jordan’s Austin Klingler by a tenth of second. For Klingler, it was his second win of the meet.
Elias Gerald backed up his win in the high jump on Tuesday with a first-place finish in the long jump, while brother Isaiah Gerald won the 300 hurdles.
In the 110 hurdles, Weber junior Ryan Trane set a new 6A state record in the best performance in two decades as he posted a 14.17.
“My start’s been lacking and my finish hasn’t been very well, and today I felt like I finished a lot better. I definitely dug in the whole way. I don’t know how my start looked, but I know my finish felt good,” said Trane, whose top time coming into the meet was 14.38.
Lone Peak sophomore sparkled in his primary event as well, the 1,600 meters. He outkicked a strong field to the finish line to finish in 4:08.44, the fifth best time in state history.
“Tired, feeling good though. It was a hard race, but feeling real good,” said Hartshorn.
On the girls side, another sophomore enjoyed a phenomenal meet and made it known that she’s a real threat to the state record books next year. That standout was Fremont’s Amare Harlan, who won the 100 and 200 meters along with the long jump.
“I’m super excited for the following year and just to continue to keep running,” said Harlan, who also plays soccer in the fall for Fremont. “Both my parents were kind of into track and field when they were in high school, so they wanted me to kind of do it as well.”
After winning the long jump on Tuesday, Harlan backed it up Wednesday with top podium finishes in the 100 meters (11.83) and 200 meters (24.17). Both were the best marks in the state this year, and within striking distance of state records. The 11.83 is the third-best time in state history and .17 off the state record. The 24.17 in the 200 is the second-best time ever in Utah and .42 off the record.
She wasn’t the only multi-event winner at the 6A meet.
Herriman junior Addi Bruening backed up her 3,200 meter win on Tuesday by winning the 1,600 meters on Wednedsay. Layton’s Lia Katoa won the shot put and discus as well.
Westlake’s Brilee Pontius was a runner-up to Harlan in both the 100 and 200 meters, but she shined in her speciality the 400 meters as she won the a time of 55.64, the best mark in Utah this spring.
