Behind two second-half goals from Brooklyn Dowdle and Samantha Sellers, Lone Peak cruised their way to a 3-0 victory over Farmington in the quarterfinals of the 6A girls soccer tournament.
“It feels good for sure. I think Farmington is a much better team than their record shows. I told the girls that the only way any team is going to beat us is if they outwork us. We knew that if we could come out and play with the intensity that we are capable of, everything else would take care of itself,” said Lone Peak head coach Shantel Jolley.
This was somewhat of a revenge game for Lone Peak, who were ousted out of the tournament last year during the semifinals by the same Farmington team. Jolley admitted they haven’t forgotten that defeat.
“There was a little motivation there. With high school, there’s turnover every single year. We graduated some big players that were on our team before, but I feel like we brought back our core and I feel like we were a better team than we were before. I was certainly expecting a different result this time around.”
Lone Peak didn’t waste any time and were able to find the back of the net just 4 minutes into the game when Brooks Hendricks crossed the ball into the middle of the box, finding an open Kate Denney who calmly slotted the ball past the Farmington keeper to take the early lead.
Lone Peak was able to dominate the possession for most of the first half, with Farmington trying to threaten and getting some half chances.
Farmington put together an impressive first half and were only down by one goal heading into the halftime break.
Lone Peak got the all-important second goal with 15:41 left on a Brooklyn Dowdle goal, with Brooks Hendricks getting her second assist of the game.
Samantha Sellers would go on to rub salt on Farmington’s wound, scoring off a deflection with just over a minute left in the game.
Even though Lone Peak has a number of players on the team that are capable of taking a game over, there is a clear message that Jolly has been preaching all season long.
“Our biggest thing that I’ve harped on all year and has honestly been the key to our success is that these girls are selfless. I’ve got some rockstars for forwards up there and they could easily be wanting to do it on their own, but the girls are always wanting to find the right pass and wanting to see their teammates score more than themselves.”
