The trends

For Utah: Utah started 4-0 with wins over Florida, Baylor, Weber State and UCLA before dropping its first game of the season against Oregon State.

For Cal: Cal is 1-2 in its last three games, losing to Washington before beating Arizona State. The Bears are also coming off a loss to the Beavers.

What to watch for

Cal is starting its third different quarterback this season. Freshman Fernando Mendoza, making his first start, threw for 207 yards and two touchdowns and had one interception, completing 21 of 32 passes in a 52-40 loss to the Beavers. He also added 41 yards on four rushes. The freshman did fairly well against an Oregon State defense that held Utah to seven points and 141 passing yards.

Rice-Eccles Stadium is a notoriously hard place for freshmen quarterbacks to play, coupled with Utah’s excellent defense, which has almost single-handedly won it games this season. It will be a big test for Mendoza on Saturday.
