Cross country coaches always talk to their athletes about catching the runner in front of them in a race. You just never know if that one point will make a difference. It made a massive difference at the 2A state meet on Tuesday at the Regional Athletic Complex in Rose Park.

The 2A girls state championship came down to just one measly point, with North Summit edging Grand 40 points to 41 points.

Depth was key for North Summit in winning its third straight state title. North Summit coach Dave Peck knew going in Grand runners were too good at the top, but North Summit’s depth was good enough at it showed as his top five runners all placed inside the top 12, which proved to be the difference.

“I think they realized that with Grand coming down from 3A to 2A and how well they did last year, they really just had to step up and be able to work hard,” said Peck. That hard work has been present all season.

Just two weeks ago, in an effort to really push the team toward state, Peck asked his team if they were good with making the 13-mile run from Coalville to Henefer after school for practice.

“They all said, ‘sure, we’ll do it,” said Peck.

And on Monday night this week, at the team meeting before state when Peck asked them what the best part of the season was, they all said the run to Henefer.

As good as North Summit was as a team on Tuesday, nobody was going to keep up with Grand senior Cadence Kasprick — not even the defending 2A state champ.

Kasprick finished third individually a year ago in 3A, but she absolutely dominated the 2A race on Tuesday winning with a time of 17:49.7. Last year’s champ, Kanab sophomore Kenidee Glazier, finished second, with a time of 18:15.5. Grand’s Ainsleigh Kasprick finished third in 19:08.5.

Kasprick said she went out fast to try and pull away from Glazier earlier, but Glazier stayed with her until about the final mile when Kasprick pulled away.

“Even when I got a lead, I was like ‘OK, don’t take anything for granted. You got to keep going,’” said Kasprick.

She said as a team Grand was really hoping to claim the state title on Tuesday, and losing by a point stings. But considering one of their runners was hobbled by a recent ankle sprain it was a great finish overall and something she’s proud of.

“We’ve really come together as a team in these last few weeks. When you’re out there and you’re hurting, you have to think about other people around you, and you’re bleeding for them. Cross country really is a team sport, and I think we’ve really come together the past three weeks,” said Kasprick.

In the boys 2A meet, the team title was decided by a close margin as well, even though not a razor-thin margin like the girls.

Millard captured its fourth straight team championship as it finished with 74 team points, good enough to edge runner-up Water Canyon — which won the 1A title a year ago.

Millard junior Ben Ralphs took home top honors for his time as he finished first with a strong time of 16:10.3. A year ago he finished second to his older brother Michael Ralphs, but with older brother graduated it was his time to shine.

“It was a lot different than last year because last year I got used to running with him and behind him usually,” said Ben Ralphs.

San Juan’s Edward Lyman finished second with a time of 16:31.3, with North Sevier’s Emmitt Nelson in third at 16:42.2.

Coming into the race, Ben Ralphs figured his team was the favorite, but he knows that at state anything can happen.

“I thought we were probably going to win but I wasn’t too sure cause even in some of our region meets we’ve been beating once or twice. We knew it would be close, but we felt like if everyone ran they race we’d be able to take it,” said Ben Ralphs.
