‘Black Widow’ trailer gives us a glimpse at a new villain

The Marvel Cinematic Universe is back with ‘Black Widow’

Before the Marvel Cinematic Universe moves forward, it’ll go back with the release of “Black Widow.”

What’s going on: Marvel dropped the newest trailer for the upcoming film “Black Widow” during Monday night’s College Football Playoff National Championship game.

  • The trailer dropped with a behind-the-scenes look at the production of the film.

What it shows: The “Black Widow” trailer shows Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) returning home while on the run. She meets with her sister Yelena (Florence Pugh) and other friends Melina (Rachel Weisz) and Alexi Shostakov/Red Guardian (David Harbour).

  • The trailer shows Black Widow on the run from attackers.

New villain: A villain, named the Taskmaster, appears in the trailer, too.

  • It’s unclear who plays the Taskmaster.
  • Per The Verge: “Although his big fight is mostly teased at the end of the trailer, it’s clear that he’s a formidable opponent.”
  • In the Marvel comics, Taskmaster acts as an antihero most of the time. He can mimic the abilities of whoever he fights, giving him an advantage over his opponents, according to The Verge.

Timeline: “Black Widow” brings us back to the days between “Captain America: Civil War” and “Avengers: Infinity War” — a time when Black Widow and Captain America remained in hiding from the U.S. government.

  • The film will include flashbacks to Black Widow’s childhood, too.
  • It’s unclear if the film will take place after “Avengers: Endgame” in any way. Black Widow passed away in that film.
  • Rumors suggest Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) could make an appearance in the film, too.

Release date: May 1, 2020
