A new batch of “Star Wars” rumors suggest the third season of “The Mandalorian” might be gearing up for production already, and it might have new cast members.
What’s going on?
Deadline reports “The Mandalorian” season 3 might begin production soon under the name of “Buccaneer.” Disney+ and Lucasfim have not confirmed the start of production.
- Sophie Thatcher (“Chicago Med”) has been rumored to join the show.
- Sources told Deadline it’s unclear if Thatcher will join “The Mandalorian” or a spinoff project.
Deeper dive:
Former Disney CEO Bob Iger said previously that the company planned to have spinoff series tied to “The Mandalorian,” which would have “the possibility of infusing (the mothership series) with more characters and taking those characters in their own direction in terms of series.”
One rumor suggested there could be an animated spinoff with Cara Dune (Gina Carano) and Bo-Katan Kryze (Katee Sackhoff), who appeared in “Star Wars Rebels.”
What we know about season 3
Executive producer and showrunner Jon Favreau recently told Variety that “The Mandalorian” remains “on schedule” to begin production “before the end of the year,” which would line up with the Deadline timeloine.
Favreau said the show’s filming method, which includes using wall-like video panels to show various locations, will allow it to film during the pandemic.
- “We’re in very small situations and oftentimes we have a lot of characters in masks,” he said. “And we also have a lot of digital work that augments things. So we’re a show that’s probably well-equipped to be flexible based on the protocols that are emerging surrounding work restarting.”
Production staff members created concept art for the show in April 2020, as I wrote about for the Deseret News.
- One source told Variety: “We’ve just started preproduction and are looking into further adventures for the Mandalorian in season 3.”
