Disney Plus has sent production of “The Mandalorian” into hyperspace, as the show’s third season is already under development, Variety reports.
- Preproduction has started on the Disney Plus show, which is set to release its second season in October.
- Unnamed sources told Variety that Jon Favreau has been “writing season 3 for a while.”
- The art department, which includes Lucasfilm vice president and executive creative director Doug Chiang, has already developed art concepts for the new season, too.
- One source told Variety: “We’ve just started preproduction and are looking into further adventures for the Mandalorian in Season 3.”
- Another source told Variety that production design began on April 20, giving the show “a huge lead time.” The source added, “the gears have started grinding really early on.”
Some additional context:
News about a third season for “The Mandalorian” comes long before the show’s second season has even kicked off. The show is set to release its second season in October. Favreau confirmed the second season on Twitter earlier this year.

What’s going to happen in season two?
- Not much is known about the upcoming plot for season two.
- The season finale did include Moff Gideon (Giancarlo Esposito) wielding a darksaber. He said in interivews that the darksaber might play a role in the next season Esposito told IMDB that we could expect some sword fights.
- Esposito said: “I’m decent. I’m getting better. But you have to respect the power of it, the energy of it. It’s long, dude. I’ve bopped myself three times already. Pop in the head, I’m like ... what do I do? I start laughing. People look at me, they want me to be the expert right off the bat. But you know what? It takes practice. So we have long ones, we have short ones. Because sometimes they have to put it in. And guess what? I can say this? I can say it, I can say it. I’m going through it in my head, spoilers, blah blah blah. I can say it. I’ve broken three of those bad boys.”
- And, according to multiple reports, Rosario Dawson will join the show to play Ahsoka Tano, the famous character from “The Clone Wars” and “Star Wars Rebels.” Hints at Ahsoka’s role in the second season of “The Mandalorian” have been seen on “The Clone Wars” already this year.
