Utah’s Megaplex Theatres had four of the top 10 locations in North America for the opening of “Wonder Woman 1984” over the weekend, according to a release from the company.
- In fact, Megaplex Theatres at The District in South Jordan ranked first in North America for the opening of “Wonder Woman 1984.”
- Jordan Commons placed No. 4, Thanksgiving Point ranked No. 6 and Geneva hit No. 10.
Key quote:
“We’re honored that guests chose Megaplex Theatres to help them celebrate the holiday season with these much-anticipated films,” said Blake Andersen, Megaplex Theatres president, in a statement to the Deseret News. “We’re especially grateful to our extraordinary team who worked tirelessly to clean and sanitize every auditorium between each screening to ensure a healthy and safe environment for all of our guests.”
Bigger picture:
“Wonder Woman 1984” earned $16.7 million in its domestic opening run over the weekend, which is the most of any film released during the COVID-19 pandemic, as I wrote about for the Deseret News.
Nearly half of HBO Max’s subscribers watched “Wonder Woman 1984” over the weekend, too. HBO Max had about 3.6 million users back in October, according to CNBC. It’s unclear if there have been more subscribers since then.
One more note ...
A spokesperson for Megaplex told me the Utah theater chain ranked No. 1 in North America for the opening of Tom Hanks’ western drama, “News of the World,” too.
- Specifically, Megaplex Theatres at Jordan Commons in Sandy ranked first for the opening of the film.
