Warning: This article contains spoilers for Season 2, Episode 6 of “The Mandalorian,” titled “The Tragedy.”
“Star Wars: The Mandalorian” brought back Cara Dune in the most recent episode to set up an epic final two episodes for the season.
What happened:
Chapter 14 of “The Mandalorian” — titled “The Tragedy” — features the Mandalorian and Grogu heading to Tython so Grogu can connect with the Force. Once he does, multiple visitors arrive on scene, including Fennec, Boba Fett (yes, really) and a boat load of stormtroopers. There’s a lot that happens. But basically, the Empire steals Grogu by the end of the episode.
After that whole skirmish, Mando’s ship gets destroyed. So he, Fett and Fennec head back to Nevarro, where Mando meets with Cara Dune (Gina Carano) to find an imprisoned sharpshooter.
We learn in that scene that Dune is a member of the New Republic now, working as a marshal for the government in the Outer Rim. This was briefly hinted at earlier this season when a New Republic offer gave Dune a symbol to become a marshal for the area.
Why it matters
Carano has been under criticism for months because of her social media posts. I’ve written about this before if you want to really dive into it. She’s previously questioned the 2020 election when it comes to voter fraud, and she shared a meme that mocked wearing face masks. Fans called for her exit from the show with the hashtag #FireGinaCarano.
Her previous appearance hinted at Carano having an exit for the show. The New Republic tease made it clear Dune could leave the show entirely, or that she would get her own spinoff.
Now, we know a little bit more about Dune’s future. Her future appears to be secure on the show, serving as a New Republic marshal for that part of the galaxy. It’s unlikely she would not be dropped from the show while holding such an important role. She’s a clear link between the Mandalorian group and the New Republic.
Of course, this could all change in the next two weeks if she’s killed off by the Imperial forces. She looks to be getting involved with Mando’s attempt to rescue the Child, so she could see some skirmishes.
Either way, it appears Caranos’ fate on “The Mandalorian” is safe for the time begin despite the controversy and calls for her exit.
