Fortnite will launch its latest season on Feb. 20, which means we’re one week away from the new installment. And we don’t know anything about what the new season will bring.

Some context

  • Fortnite is a battle royale style video game that operates in seasons. Every 50 to 90 days, the game will launch a new season that includes new characters, accessories, changes to the map and storylines that run throughout the entire length of the season.
  • Often, new clues for the upcoming season will arrive in the game in the weeks leading up to the new season.
  • In October 2019, Fortnite ended its first “chapter” of seasons with a huge event where the game went offline for two days.
  • The game came back online with season 1 for chapter 2, which has been running ever since.

When is Fortnite chapter 2, season 2 coming out?

  • Season 2 is expected to be released Feb. 20. No details have been made available.
  • Leakers haven’t discovered any information. Data miners don’t know anything. There are literally no details out there.
  • According to Forbes writer Paul Tassi:

“But unlike past seasons, the community has absolutely zero clues about what’s coming next.

“This is extremely unusual for a game that since season 2-3 has telegraphed at least some sort of major change coming to the game through in-game events, whether that’s a meteor drifting down the earth, a Cube rolling toward a lake, a monster leaving footprints around or a volcano about to erupt.

Fortnite Chapter 2 season 1 has nothing. Absolutely nothing. There have been no “plot developments” this season at all. Loading screens show a good guy group facing off against a bad guy group, all made up of game skins, but none of this has translated on the map itself. Nothing on the map has changed all season except for a few crashed TIE fighters for the Star Wars event and then accumulating and melting snow over the holidays. This is pretty unprecedented, given the last few years.”

Some theories about the new season update

  • A long-running theory popularized last October stated that the new season happened in a parallel universe — showing that everything from the game’s first chapter happened just on another timeline, which I wrote about for the Deseret News.
  • Multiple reports suggested that leaked images showed a map change that included a leak at Steamy Stacks, creating a toxic area. Another image showed flooding around Slurpy Swamp and Misty Meadows. These images were reportedly created by a social media user and were deemed fake.

What should you expect?

  • Fortnite has been successful over the past few years at drumming up suspense for its players. The fact that there is no hype is in itself a level of hype. Gamers who care about new seasons must be wondering what’s going on so it’s clear that there is some level of hype.
  • And, maybe, the new season won’t change too much. The game made a major shift with a new map and new dynamics with this season. So it’s unlikely the team will make any huge shifts in the future.
  • Feb. 20 will be an important day moving forward.
